Van Diemens Land come all you gallant poaching boys that ramble void of care that wander out on moonlit nights  with a dog and gun and snare the hare and lofty pheasant  you have at your command never thinking of your last career  upon Van Diemens Land poor Tomy Brown from Londonderry Jack Murphy and Poor Joe we was daring poachers  as everybody well did know by the keepers of the land oh boys  one night we’re trapped oh boys who for fourteen years  transported us into Van Diemens Land the first day that we landed  upon that fatal shore the planters came around us  they might be twenty score, they ranked us up like horses  and sold us out of hand and they yoked us up to ploughing frames  to plough Van Diemens Land the cottages we are living in are built of sods of clay we have rotten straw for bedding and to that we daren’t say nay the cots we fence with fire and slumber when we can to keep the wolves and tigers from us in Van Diemens land it’s often when in slumber  I’ve had a pleasant dream with my sweet girl sittin near me down by some lovely stream I’m roving thru ol’ irland  with my truelove by the hand then I wake up broken-hearted  upon Van Diemens Land god bless our wives and families, likewise that happy shore, that isle of sweet contentment which we shall see no more as for our wretched females see them we seldom can there are twenty men to one woman  upon Van Diemens Land but fourteen years is a long time  that is our fatal doom for nothing more but poaching  and that was all we’ve done you would give up your dog and gun  and poaching, every man if you only knew the hardship  thats in Van Diemens Land  oh, if I had a thousand pounds all laid out in my hand I‘d give it all for liberty if that I could command again to Ireland I‘d return and be a happy man and I’d bid farewell to poaching and to Van Diemens Land
